Met Gala 2018- Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
Illustrations of some of my favourite MET ball looks
MET gala honorary co-chair Rihanna @badgalriri wore a custom made Artisanal Maison Margiela @maisonmargiela outfit designed by John Galliano @jgalliano. The outfit is a coordinated three- piece, comprising of a sculptural jacket and a skirt worn over a bustier dress and a custom made hat.
Each piece has been realised in an elaborate seafoam jacquard and is entirely embellished with a series of pearls and “Bijoux” following the original, intricate motifs of the fabric, sewn in silver thread.
In total, the outfit took 250 hours to sew and 500 hours to hand embroider by Maison Margiela’s Paris Atelier.
Lana’s gown, inspired by Our Lady of Sorrows.
“…a custom Gucci silk cady and lace gown inspired by our Lady of Sorrows by Alessandro Michele @lallo25. The bodice features ‘The Seven Sorrows of Mary’ with the initials ‘LDR’ on the sacred heart. The skirt features hand stitched gold metal and coloured silk thread embroidery inspired by baroque floral motifs and daggers with a pleated tulle and lace underskirt. Completing the look is a handmade headpiece with painted feathers and crystal halo and handmade antique glass stick representing the eyes of Saint Lucy.”
“@janellemonae wanted something that married elements from her newly released #dirtycomputer album visuals and the most recent @marcjacobs runway collection. from that, the sparkling head wrap was born and the tone of the @stephenjonesmillinery x @marcjacobs‘halo’ hat was selected, to echo the album cover art. the graphic black + white design of the skirt suiting, is not only a @janellemonae signature and homage to her working class roots, but also plays heavily in liturgical wardrobe. moreover, it’s a reference to duality- not only in religion, but in every aspect of our lives- and recognizing the balance/imbalance it plays. the train was made from an exquisite silk moiré, a fabric used for centuries in roman catholic wardrobe, which also happens to appear throughout the #marcjacobs FW 18 collection.”

“Dotted with hundreds of covered buttons, Amber’s @amberheard silk georgette gown is a practice of dual personalities. Demure in the front, the gown appears to be covered from neck to wrist to toe, until its exposed back reveals a dramatic bustle and train.”
