Portraiture

Some might say I have a slight obsession with painting people. There’s something about rendering the literal shape & form of human beings that makes it so personal and intimate.

I’m often reminded of an excerpt from Emily Wilson’s poem, Postcard I Almost Send To An Almost Lover

Instead, I
think of how, in Czech,

“to paint” and “to love”
are only one vowel
away: malovat; milovat.

The salutation alone
is written. I paint
you, I paint you, I paint you.
